What is Business Intelligence?
The term "Business Intelligence" has been in common use for over 10 years but the concepts have existed in the business world since business data first became computerised.
A forerunner to BI was the term Knowledge Management which encompassed some of the concepts from an organisation point of view which BI applies to the storage and retrieval of critical business information.
In essence, Business Intelligence refers to the process whereby technology can be used to transform raw data into information which can be utilised to support business decision making.
This is usually undertaken by preparing a reports suite which can access a number of different databases, usually stored in a data warehouse, in order to provide immediate management information for the business decision making process.
